Nikita Mazepin wins the main race

And two for Nikita mazepin ! The Russian driver scored his second victory of the season this Saturday at Mugello, after the main race which he won at Silverstone. He beat his teammate at Hitech Luca Ghiotto and the Swiss Louis Deletraz (Charouz).

The Russian delivered a superb comeback, after starting from 14th place. Above all, he perfectly managed the appearance of the two safety cars, which completely changed the appearance of the race. It all started on lap 22, with Giuliano Alesi (HWA Racelab) forced to park his car in the gravel after another technical problem.

On relaunch, Yuki tsunoda (Carlin) attacked Daniel Ticktum (DAMS) for 3rd place, but the two men touched and the Briton tumbled, finishing the race 17th. Mazepin took the opportunity to move up from 8th to 3rd place, with new tires.

Schumacher new leader

At the same time, an Aitken-Zhou-Schumacher knocked out the first two cities. And led to the appearance of a new safety car, five laps from the end. This time, Christian Lundgaard, still in the lead, did not manage the restart well and was sucked in at the end of the first straight by the two Hitech drivers Mazepin and Ghiotto.

This success allows Mazepin to re-enter the title race, in 4th place in the driver rankings. But the good operation is to the credit of Mick Schumacher (Prema). His 5th place, combined with the retirement of Robert Shwartzman (Prema) on the 18th lap, and the final 12th place of Callum Ilott (UNI-Virtuosi), allows the German to take the lead in the championship for the first time in the season ahead of Ilott and Shwartzman.
