Nyck de Vries scores a double blow at Paul Ricard

Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) won the main race at Paul Ricard in the FIA F2, after having achieved a magnificent flight.

At the start, Sergio Sette Camara (DAMS) missed his start, and saw Nyck de Vries take the advantage at the first corner from fourth position by overtaking the leading trio Sette Camara – Jack Aitken (Campos Racing) from the outside. – Guanyu-Zhou (Uni-Virtuosi).

A little further in the peloton, and the start of the Sainte-Beaume sequence, a contact occurs between Sean Gelael in distress and Mick Schumacher (Prema Racing), the Indonesian violently colliding with the German driver, both of whom had to give up. The virtual safety car is then deployed.

Another incident between Ralph Boschung (Trident) and Nikita mazepin (ART Grand Prix) eliminates the two drivers, while Dorian Boccolacci (Campos Racing), stopped at the side of the track under VSC regime, retires in turn.

The red flag is finally deployed to take care of all the immobilized cars. After several minutes of interruption, the competitors can finally return to the track behind the safety car.

De Vries controls

On the restart, Nyck de Vries retained the advantage over Jack Aitken. The positions remained fixed for the lead of the race until the pit stops, where Aitken was part of the first contingent to go through the pit lane with Sette Camara and Nobuharu Matsushita (Carlin).

De Vries waited one more lap but it was Aitken who took the advantage when the Dutchman returned to the track. Not for long, however, with de Vries regaining provisional first place when braking for the chicane on the Mistral straight.

The race was then neutralized twice following the incident between Callum Ilott (Sauber Junior Team by Charouz) and Matsushita, then the stoppage of Luca Ghiotto (Uni-Virtuosi).

But Nyck de Vries will still remain a solid leader until the checkered flag (with the best lap in the race as a bonus) while the fight for second place will see its outcome wait until the very last laps.

Sergio Setta Camara took advantage of Jack Aitken's difficulties with his tires to pass after the Mistral chicane and secure second place on the podium ahead of Aitken. Guanyu Zhou finished 4th ahead Nicholas latifi (DAMS), the championship leader before this French meeting.

Anthoine Hubert (Arden) finishes eighth and will start in pole position for the sprint race tomorrow morning in the Var. Giuliano Alesi (Trident), who started from the pit lane, finished 10th.

Note that Nyck de Vries takes control of the championship with this victory in the main race at Paul Ricard, and before Sunday's sprint event, scheduled for 11:25 a.m.
