Trevor Carlin: “We’ll have to help each other to survive”

The boss of the Carlin team, notably involved in Formula 2, Formula 3 and Indycar, spoke to AUTOhebdo. If he does not despair of returning to the circuits in 2020, he does not hide his economic concerns either.

Trevor Carlin: “We’ll have to help each other to survive”

How are you handling this crisis?

Unfortunately, there is no instruction manual for handling a situation like this. Let’s say I manage a little bit on a day to day basis. The first thing to do is make sure all my teams are doing well. Our factories in the UK and USA are closed. We are waiting for the situation to improve and for governments to give us the green light to return to work. There is nothing else to do. I imagine that tests will take place before the resumption and that the national races, in particular the British championships of F3 and F4, will restart first. For'Indycar, I am hopeful that it will resume in June. But for the F2 and F3, it's going to be more problematic I think, because the teams come from all over the world. We won't restart before August, in my opinion.

Is the team suffering economically?

Of course I'm worried. Like everyone else... the problem is that no one knows how long this will last. If it lasts three months, it should be fine. If we have six months on the other hand, things will start to get tough. And then if it lasts nine months, it will probably be impossible to manage. Everyone is in the same position. We will have to help each other to survive this.

Have you stopped all activities related to motorsport?

No, I continue to work on our strategies. On what will happen for the team depending on the different resumption dates. At the same time, engineers work from home on their computers running simulations and drivers do Simracing. We try not to stop and keep people busy, so that when it comes time to restart, we are the fastest on the track.

Do you think the F2 and F3 seasons will happen?

I'm confident. I hope so, anyway. I imagine we will only have two thirds of the season, so around nine weekends in F2 and seven in F3. But that's just my opinion.

What are your F2 goals for 2020?

The objective is always to be as efficient as possible, obviously. In F2, we have two rookies: Jehan Daruvala and Yuki tsunoda, but they are fast boys and who performed well during the pre-season testing in Bahrain, where we were the fastest almost all week. We should be able to fight in the Teams championship and place our two drivers in the final Top 6.

Which of your two drivers is best equipped to fight at the front this season?

I am sure that they read your magazine or that some of your readers will relate my comments to them (laughter. Editor’s note)! No, honestly, they have a fairly similar level. If I had to put my foot down, I would say that Daruvala is perhaps faster in qualifying and Tsunoda is very strong in the race.
