368,6 km/h and front row start for Jorge Martín at the Italian Grand Prix: "I knew I could break the record"

It's a record-breaking weekend at Mugello! This Saturday, May 30, during Free Practice 2, Jorge Martín pushed the limits of his machine by setting a new absolute benchmark of 368,6 km/h, erasing the previous record of 366,1 km/h jointly held by Brad Binder and Pol Espargaró.

A record that already seemed threatened earlier in the session. Ai Ogura had indeed equaled the mark of 366,1 km/h during FP2, proof that the Aprilia is not lacking in top speed. But it was ultimately Jorge Martín who took it upon himself to write a new page in the history of the MotoGP « I knew I could beat the speed record because I was behind two motorcycles and I thought, let's go, I braked as late as possible and it was a lot of fun! " explained the Spaniard after the session.

Jorge Martín returns to the front row

Beyond this record, the Aprilia rider also achieved his best qualifying result in almost two years later in the morning. He will return to the front row for the first time since the 2024 Malaysian Grand Prix, 574 days ago. I feel much better than on Friday, the pace is much better. We need to keep improving, our rivals are very good. The Aprilia is working extremely well here, as always. It was a tricky session, with a lot of traffic, everyone was trying to get a tow, but here I am on the front row now, another goal achieved with Aprilia, everything is falling into place step by step."That's great!" rejoiced the Aprilia rider.

This performance is historic for the Italian manufacturer. Never before had Aprilia placed three of its motorcycles in the top three positions of the MotoGP grid. And what better way to achieve this than at Mugello, in front of its home crowd and on its home turf!

It's hard to imagine a better scenario for Jorge Martín and Aprilia. The Spaniard, the current record holder for Sprint race wins with 18 victories, will be looking to extend his lead over his main rival in this discipline, Marc Márquez, who has 17. The Sprint race is scheduled to start at 15:00 PM.
