Enea Bastianini made a strong impression at Silverstone, confirming the potential that seemed to be hers for several rounds. Leaving his opponents behind him during the two events of the weekend, the Italian achieved a double almost without being worried.
Becoming the fifth driver to do so since the introduction of the Sprint format, at the start of the 2023 season, the Transalpine proves that he still has pages to write in MotoGP, even though he has just been let go by Ducati, to make room for Marc Marquez.
Currently third in the championship, 49 points from the lead, Enea Bastianini is more than certainly still a potential candidate for the title. Although the gap to be filled remains significant when we know the form of its two main opponents.
Last year, at the same stage of the season, Jorge Martin's deficit compared to Francesco Bagnaia was similar, however. At 41 points behind the championship leader after Great Britain, the Pramac driver had to give ground to his opponent after a poor performance in Austria, to increase his deficit to 60 lengths.
The outcome, however, turned out in his favor. His sparkling second half of the season allowed him to keep the paddock in suspense until the start of the last event of the season, near Valencia (Spain).
Towards a three-way title race in MotoGP?
Everything is therefore far from being decided. Martin, like Bagnaia, should not be as cautious as they currently are in the face of someone who could become a serious rival.
Especially since the latter has the same equipment, with the Desmosedici GP24. Which is not the case for Marc Marquez. Fourth in the Drivers' standings, 62 points behind Jorge Martin, the No. 93 is still waiting to score his first success with Ducati this season.
If the No. 23 were to be crowned by the Valencia Grand Prix, the No. 1 would leave the Ducati fold to be sported by a rider from the KTM fold. Bastianini making up the future line-up of Tech3 with Maverick Viñales.
