Bastianini: “We are close to the championship leader”

Enea Bastianini is perhaps one of the biggest mysteries of this start of the season. When he does not win, the Gresini driver does not exceed eighth place. On the other hand, when the planets align, the Italian is almost unbeatable.

At the French GP, Bastianini crashed three times, but still managed to qualify in fifth place. “It was a very strange weekend for me with a lot of ups and downs,” admits Bastianini. But for the race, I was confident. This morning, the feeling with the bike was good, but when we put the soft on the front, it's difficult for me to ride and this weekend, I fell three times. »

Author of a good start, he was in fourth place at the first score. He first took advantage of the fall of Alex Rins before attacking Jack Miller. The Ducati representative then climbed back little by little in the wake of Francesco Bagnaia to take the advantage and move towards victory. “For the race, the medium option was the best choice for me,” he says. I tried to stay with the first group and halfway through the race I gave my best to close the gap and pass Pecco. When I tried to pass him, I think Pecco was a little nervous. He passed me again and in the end I won the race. I'm very happy with the team's work and it's great. »

A pretender to the crown?

Overall, Bastianini moves up to third place, eight points behind the leader fabio quartararo. Despite this performance, the representative of the structure of the late Fausto Gresini admits that there is still work to be done. “I finished first on three occasions, but I also had bad results,” he says. We need to understand what's going on. In the future, we must work more in difficult situations. Now we are close to the championship leader and we have to do a good job for the future. »

In around ten days, Bastianini will head to Mugello, which is a bit like Ducati's training ground...
