After a challenging Catalan Grand Prix for the Noale-based team, Aprilia bounced back in the best possible way by locking out the front row of the grid at their home race, the Italian Grand Prix. The Italian factory's lead rider, Marco Bezzecchi, secured pole position and, in doing so, broke Marc Márquez's overall fastest time set last year. Bezzecchi thus became the first rider in history to dip below 1 minute 44 seconds on the legendary Italian circuit. The number 72 rider achieved this feat through a tremendous effort.
“It’s an extremely fast time, but the overall level was truly fantastic today. So I had to push as hard as I could to try and get the perfect lap, and I’m obviously extremely pleased. It was an important qualifying session; we need to enjoy this performance, but we also need to work for the races because those are the two main events of the weekend.”
A member of the VR46 Riders' Academy since its inception, Bezzecchi, who this weekend is wearing a helmet paying tribute to Alex Zanardi, has enjoyed unwavering support from the Italian fans who made the trip. While pole position has already whipped the fans into a frenzy, Bezzecchi knows that a Sprint victory this afternoon could raise the excitement even further… "Thank you to the team, thank you to the fans as well, who have been incredible all around the circuit, and I hope we can give them something to enjoy again this afternoon."
