In 2022, Marco Bezzecchi was one of the five rookies entered in MotoGP alongside Remy Gardner, Raul Fernandez, Darry Binder and Fabio Di Giannantonio; Gardner and Fernandez having finished first and second in the Moto2 world championship in 2021.

If Gardner and Fernandez failed to find the keys to their KTM RC16, Bezzecchi distinguished himself on his Ducati, often fighting at the front. “So far, the season has been very good,” he told us ahead of the Valencia Grand Prix. Of course there were ups and downs at the beginning, but then I felt very comfortable on the bike. I was able to progress and gain consistency, which allowed me to obtain good results. »

The transition from Moto2 to MotoGP is never an easy task for a beginner. In addition to having to work on your physical condition, you also have to deal with electronics, tires, brakes. “The bike is very different from a Moto2,” he recalled. Being able to manage the power in the right way was very difficult, braking was also very complicated because now on a MotoGP it is a very important point. To perform well when braking you have to be very confident on the bike and it takes time to reach the top level. I'm not there yet (…) and then the tires, the electronics… I think the hardest part was understanding how to use and adjust the electronics. »

At Assen, just before the summer break, Bezzecchi took his first podium, finishing second. Consistent, the Italian won the title of Rookie of the Year in Australia, two races from the end. “It was a goal, but you never expect to win this title. As for the podium, my goal was to record at least one, and fortunately, I was able to achieve this goal. I was surprised to get there quite early, before the summer break, it was fantastic. »
