While many riders languish at the back of the pack for their rookie year, often struggling to keep their handlebars the following season, Augusto Fernández is largely an exception to the rule.

Born on September 23, 1997 in Madrid, Augusto Fernández had an atypical career since before joining the MotoGP this season with the GASGAS team, he has only experienced the Moto2 category. Fifth in the 2021 season, the Spaniard has joined the armada for 2022 Red Bull KTM Ajo. Taking authoritative control of the Championship after his fourth success at Silverstone, Augusto managed the end of the season marvelously to pocket the world title and see the doors open to the premier category at GASGAS.

After only five Grands Prix, the Spanish driver already has 30 points in the race, the best start by a rookie since Brad Binder in 2020. If the double allocation of points with the appearance of Sprint races could distort any comparison, it does not This is not the case since the Madrid native is still waiting to unlock his Tissot Sprint counter…

The Tech3 driver has been above all a model of consistency since the start of this campaign. Augusto is one of only three men on the grid to have taken points in the five Sunday races contested so far, with fabio quartararo and Franco Morbidelli. In a team deprived of its leader Pol Espargaró since his fall in Portimão, Fernández went to Le Mans to get a first Q2 as well as fourth place in the race, his best result in the elite.

After this more than convincing start to the season, can Augusto Fernández aim even higher by the end of the year? His boss Hervé Poncharal is convinced of this: “We must not forget that this is barely his fifth race in MotoGP. Rookies who have been capable of such performances, from you to me, there haven't been many. »
