Espargaro takes pole position at Termas de Rio Hondo

Clearly, Aleix Espargaro seems on another planet in Argentina. The Catalan, who has been in the running since the first free practice session, took pole position with a lap of 1'37.688, just five thousandths off the circuit record set by Marc Marquez in 2014.

Espargaro, who will line up at the start of his 200th race in MotoGP Sunday, also gave Aprilia its first pole in MotoGP and its third overall in category with those of Tetsuya Harada in Italy in 1999 and Jeremy McWilliams in Australia in 2000. He will start in front of Jorge Martin, who was ultimately to content with second place, and Luca Marini.

On the second row will be Pol Espargaro, who had to go through the repechage after making a mistake in FP2, Maverick Viñales, riding the other Aprilia, and fabio quartararo, credited with the sixth time with the status of first Yamaha rider. Alex Rins, Joan Mir and Johann Zarco will be on the third row.

Francesco Bagnaia is one of the big losers on this first day in Argentina. The vice-world champion, who has so far only scored one point overall, will start from 14th position. It’s not better either for Enea Bastianini, overall leader, who will start just ahead of her compatriot.

The start of the MotoGP race will be given on Sunday at 20 p.m. (Paris time).
