Quartararo managed to gain the advantage over his rival Ducati but his lap was canceled for exceeding the track limits. The Frenchman will therefore have to settle for third place on the grid. Jack Miller, who finished on the podium in both races at the Red Bull Ring last year, will lead the second row ahead of Joan Mir, who notched her best result since last year's European GP when she won her only victory in the premier category.
