Italian GP – FP1: Fabio Di Giannantonio sets the tone in the wet

The top speed records expected this weekend at the Mugello circuit will have to wait. This Friday morning, the riders took part in the first free practice session for the Italian Grand Prix on a wet track, as rain had been falling throughout the morning. In these conditions, Fabio Di Giannantonio topped the field with a time of 1:46.242, two seconds slower than Marc Márquez's pole position time last year.

Jorge Martín and Ai Ogura completed the top three on their Aprilias, ahead of a surprising Maverick Viñales, who himself finished ahead of Jack Miller, always comfortable in these conditions. Less successful when the track is tricky, Pecco Bagnaia (8th) lost control of his Ducati under braking at San Donato. Fortunately, the Italian was uninjured.

His teammate in the official Ducati team, Marc Márquez, is making a smooth return after a double operation that sidelined him for three weeks and forced him to miss the Barcelona Grand Prix. The 2025 world champion finished FP1 with the 15th fastest time, a 1:47.419.

Four thousandths of a second ahead of him, Marco Bezzecchi finished only 14th in the first race of the day. The third Italian driver to start his home Grand Prix as championship leader, he succeeds Valentino Rossi Pecco Bagnaia will have to raise his game this afternoon to qualify for Q2 and make it easier for himself to maintain the lead.
