From May 29 to June 10, the roads of the Isle of Man are closed to host the Tourist Trophy. A tradition dating back to 1907, when local authorities defied the British Empire and organized this race on open roads, defying bans. How many legends are born from desires to transgress? The Tourist Trophy route, contested on the Isle of Man, is the 2-wheeled counterpart of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Well, to be more precise, about three Nordschleife chained together in the middle of houses and trees, with sidewalks and ditches as vibrators! There, any exit from the track is punished by contact with a potentially fatal obstacle. Since the creation of the event in 1907, more than 250 drivers have paid with their lives for this love of speed and freedom.
This circuit, not urban but frankly rural, is 60,17 kilometers long, and covers a large part of the British island located in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland. The start/finish line is located on Glentcrutchery Road in Douglas, the island's capital.
To fully appreciate the excess of this race, a lap includes 264 turns covered at an average of more than 210 km/h. Peter Hickman has held the record in 16 minutes and 42 seconds since 2018 with a top speed over 330 km/h! 6 laps must be completed in the race to hope to become a legend.
Until 1976, the race was part of the calendar of the World Speed Championship, ancestor of the MotoGP. John Surtees, Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood won the event 6, 10 and 14 times respectively before it disappeared from the calendar, rightly deemed too dangerous. For the legend Giacomo Agostini who won no less than 15 world championships, a single victory at the TT was worth a title.
The legend of the event is named Joey Dunlop. With 26 victories, he is the record holder for the number of Tourist Trophy victories. He also won 24 times the Ulster Grand Prix. An insatiable jack of all trades, Dunlop died on the track in 2000 riding a 125cc, competing in a third race the same weekend after winning the 600cc and 750cc rounds. More than 50 bikers accompanied his funeral across the UK.
His nephew Michael Dunlop distinguished himself this week by setting the best times in the four categories in which he entered: Superbike, Supersport, Superstock and Supertwin! Like father, like son…
