Ducati strategy in MotoGP

Last year, Ducati won the manufacturers' title for the second time after 2007, the year at the end of which Casey Stoner won his first world champion crown. Despite the health situation and the sanctions imposed on Yamaha, it only took two victories for the Italian brand to win the final in Portugal.

Since the opening of the 2021 season, Ducati has already accumulated the same number of successes as last year thanks to Jack Miller's double in Spain then in France, and 11 podiums shared by four riders: Johann Zarco (4), Jack Miller (3), Francesco Bagnaia (3) and Jorge Martin (1); the factory has only missed the podium on three occasions this year. Note that this is the sixth time that Ducati has had at least 11 Top 3s in the same season in the premier category.

Si fabio quartararo dominates this season in qualifying with five pole positions in nine races, three Ducati representatives have one each: Baganaia, Martin and Zarco. This is also the second time that three drivers from the Borgo Panigale firm have scored at least one pole after 2018 (Miller, Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo).

For the moment, Ducati occupies second place overall, 17 points behind Yamaha, which has five victories thanks to Fabio Quartararo (4) and Maverick Viñales (1). Apart from these two, only Franco Morbidelli reached the podium in the colors of the Japanese factory.

Crucial support from the Pramac team

The four Ducati GP21s entered this year have already appeared on the podium and, with the exception of Portugal, the Italian brand has even taken two of the three steps. Unlike Ducati, Yamaha is only fielding three 1 YZR-M2021s; Morbidelli, 2020 world vice-champion, only has the 2019 model. By trusting the Pramac team, its satellite structure, the Bologna factory is preparing its spearheads of tomorrow.

Among the last winners through Pramac, we can cite Miller, Danilo Petrucci or Andrea Iannone. It is therefore only a matter of time until it is the turn of Bagnaia, Zarco or even Martin. It is often said that quantity does not equal quality... and yet it does. In 2022, there will even be eight Ducatis on the grid (compared to six this year).
