It's been said often since the start of the season that Marc Márquez is his only rival. Victorious eight times in ten races, the #93 has only been beaten when he crashed, and this was the case once again this weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix. While in third position, the Cervera native lost the front end in turn 8. While this crash didn't end his race, the damage to his Ducati Demosedici GP25 and the accumulated delay only allowed him to climb back to twelfth place overall. This is how Álex Márquez, the winner of the day, reclaims the championship lead with a narrow lead over his Gresini-owned Ducati.
"I made a mistake, I have to learn from it and try to avoid them in the future if I want to fight for the championship.", he got slightly annoyed on the official MotoGP website. "We have a very good pace, but once again... In Austin I understood why I crashed, because I was attacking, here I have to analyze all that a little because I was calm, I stayed in the wheel like in the first races because I know that the second half of the race is my strong point. That's how it is, and you have to accept it."
Winner of the Sprint on Saturday after setting the second fastest time in qualifying, Marc Márquez was no more in trouble at Jerez than he has been at any other track since the start of the season. Riding at least half a step above the competition, the six-time premier class world champion is happy with that. Indeed, if, in addition to crashing, he doesn't display extraordinary pace, there will be danger ahead!
“The important thing is that the speed is there, but we really have to avoid mistakes. That almost makes me happy, because if you don't have the pace and you crash, you have two things to fix! The pace is there, we just have to avoid mistakes. The second half of the race is my advantage, but we'll have to learn for the future. We're only one point behind the leader.”
Marc Márquez proud of his brother
A leader who is his brother Álex Márquez. As after the Grand Prix of the Americas, it is the Gresini team rider who returns to the top of the hierarchy in the general classification. The only reason to smile for the big brother, delighted to see his brother join him on the list as a Grand Prix winner in MotoGPAnd given his consistency since the start of the season, the younger brother will play his luck boldly until the last Grands Prix of a 2025 season that is decidedly idyllic for his father, Julia...
"The only thing that makes me smile, even if it's not a big one, is Alex's victory.", recalled Marc Márquez. "I'm very happy for him and very proud of him. He worked very hard to win a MotoGP race. It was one of his career goals. He won the race, he's leading the world championship again, he's riding incredibly well. I'm proud of my brother."
Fight with Bagnaia
Finally, this Spanish Grand Prix was also the occasion to witness a first battle, albeit shortened, between Marc Márquez and his teammate Francesco Bagnaia. Trading second position several times on the first lap, the two men even came into contact in the final sector. Nothing to upset the Spaniard, delighted to have been able to fight like this against the 2022 and 2023 world champion.
"It was a great battle with Pecco, the first lap is very important here in Jerez. We touched between turns 10 and 11, but other than that it was a great fight. Unfortunately, we couldn't continue it until the end of the race." Will the fight continue in two weeks at the French Grand Prix at Le Mans?
