Marquez: “Some days are better than others”

After several weeks of rest and light physiotherapy, Marc Marquez worked hard by frequently going to the gym. Initially it was about maintaining his fitness during his recovery, but he has now started working on strengthening his right arm working closely with his team of doctors, physiotherapists and counsellors. The entire program is carefully monitored and managed.

Her training currently focuses on running, swimming, and indoor resistance training with resistance bands. Each week, the weight increases slowly to increase strength without putting too much strain on the body. “Step by step, I feel better, and the bone is healing well, which is the best news of all,” says Marquez. We are still in the rehabilitation phase; I'm working really hard on the cardio front to try to be ready. At the end of August I will have another medical check-up, and from there we can take another step in rehabilitation and really start pushing and building muscle. Some days are better than others, but that's part of the journey. I'm optimistic, but I don't want to say too much about the timelines until we have that control. Now is not the time to push too hard. I waited a long time for this kind of feeling. »

“It’s been a fight, I haven’t been fighting for two days or two months, but for two years,” he continued. I won a few races last year like that, but I was struggling a lot. In Jerez I realized that something had to change. It was tough and it's still tough now mentally, not because I'm not running, but because you always have doubt on your arm. I can't have another operation. I'm sure this one will be good, but those thoughts are always there, in the back of your mind. »

In parallel with his rehabilitation, Marquez is following the development of the RC213V very closely by discussing with Stefan Bradl, his replacement, but also a Honda test driver. Since the Italian GP, the last meeting before his operation, the Spaniard is still the best classified Honda driver overall.

His absence is therefore greatly felt in the clan of the winged constructor who can only wait for his protégé to quickly return in great shape. “Honda is at a critical moment,” says the Catalan. I talk a lot with my team and try to understand the 2022 bike, the situation and what is happening. This is why I am going to go to Austria to talk with everyone and to meet the HRC staff in Japan in order to prepare for the future. We all work together, we win together, we lose together, and we will come back together. I also talk a lot with Stefan Bradl, Santi (Hernandez, his chief mechanic) and we work together and test things, both know how I ride. I told Mugello that I will be at home, but that I want to stay in touch. After the previous operation, I was too disconnected, and I want to be involved so that when I come back, everything will be fresh. »

Marquez will therefore be at Red Bull Ring next week. Hopefully Honda gives us the opportunity to chat with the eight-time world champion.
