The Ducati rider also broke the Mugello circuit record, which had been held since last year by Jorge Martín. Marc Márquez beat his teammate Francesco Bagnaia and his brother Álex Márquez, who will start alongside him on the front row, by less than a tenth of a second. The No. 93, who leads the world championship, continues to reassure himself on tracks that historically favor Bagnaia.
"I'm very happy because it's a real pole position, without slipstreaming, all alone on the track trying to find where the limit is.", he explained in the Parc Fermé. "It was a good lap, and I'm happy to do it on a circuit where Pecco and Alex are supposed to be faster than me on paper."
While pole position is Marc Márquez's first battle, the Cervera native knows that the weekend's two races could prove to be a different kettle of fish. The heatwave currently hitting France is also making its way to Italy, and temperatures of over 30°C are expected this Saturday afternoon for the first race of the weekend. These conditions are expected to be significantly different from those seen this Saturday morning, forcing the eight-time world champion to remain on his guard.
"I'm on pole, the race pace doesn't look bad either, but we have to stay patient and careful because the heat in the afternoon could change everything. For now, we're on target, and I'm looking forward to fighting in the Sprint and the Grand Prix."
A 93rd victory for Rossi?
For the record, if Márquez manages to win this Sunday, he will secure his 93rd Grand Prix victory, all on the home turf of his current rival, Pecco Bagnaia, and that of his historic rival, Valentino Rossi…No doubt, this will be an additional motivation for the Spaniard!
