Marquez will try to regain confidence in Austin

With seven wins in eight races at the Americas GP in Austin, Marc Marquez couldn't ask for a better place to make his return from injury. The Catalan had to skip the races in Mandalika and Argentina due to a new episode of diplopia (double vision) which occurred after his fall during warm-up in Indonesia.

As with the previous episode from which he suffered at the end of last year, Marquez observed conservative treatment and it only took him three weeks to get back on a motorcycle. “After Mandalika, the week was hard,” he admitted. But luckily, the injury was less serious than last time. » He admits to having even considered returning to Argentina, but he preferred to be cautious. “I didn’t have the motivation to take this risk,” he explained. I spoke with my doctor and we chose to stay home before returning to training properly. »

Earlier in the week, Marquez visited his trusted eye doctor for a final check-up. At the end of this exam, he got the green light to get back on the handlebars of a motorcycle. He first tried a Honda 600CBR at Alcarras before deciding to head to Austin and the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), a track on which he won almost everything. “It’s possible, but that’s not the way to approach this weekend,” he replied about a potential victory. We are coming back from Indonesia after having encountered a lot of problems and falling a lot. I started training again a few days ago. It will just be a matter of regaining confidence. »

Indeed, this is not the first time that the Spaniard finds himself thrown from his RC213V. In Jerez in 2020, an equally violent highside caused him to fracture his right humerus. He escaped the worst at Assen last year and fell violently in similar circumstances (sudden loss of the rear). If, in his own words, he feels better than in Qatar, in terms of confidence, Marquez even admits to being afraid... And when a driver is afraid and does not have confidence in his machine, it is not always good sign.
