Undeniably in contention for the world title against his teammate Marco Bezzecchi as the Continental Circus visits Mugello for the seventh round of the season, Jorge Martín once again demonstrated his effectiveness in sprint races, finishing second on Saturday. The record holder for victories in the discipline introduced in 2023 (18 wins), the Spaniard nevertheless didn't push himself to the limit in his bid for a nineteenth.
Indeed, starting with a medium tire on the rear of his Aprilia RS-GP, Jorge Martín had to contend with Raúl Fernández, who was equipped with the same bike, run by the satellite Trackhouse team, and the same tire choice! A pragmatic approach therefore prevailed for the 2024 world champion, who above all did not want to risk foolishly losing the points for second place, knowing that his teammate Marco Bezzecchi finished just off the podium in the Sprint.
“My team did an excellent job, and our goal is always to improve. Friday wasn’t easy, but we knew our potential is always to finish on the podium, so that was my objective. Today, I felt really good. When I was closing the gap to Raúl, it became a bit more difficult, and I finally told myself that the points were more important than risking a crash. I did my best, Raúl was impressive, and I have to congratulate him and the Trackhouse team.”
Present on the front row for the first time since the 2024 Malaysian Grand Prix, Jorge Martín will have the opportunity to try to win for the second time this season in a Grand Prix this Sunday, starting at 14pm at Mugello.
