From the start of the Italian GP Tests MotoGP, which always take place under clear skies at Mugello, the KTMs confirm their potential. While Pedro Acosta once again sets the fastest lap of the session, he is closely followed by Maverick Viñales, while Brad Binder also features in the top 10, having set the second fastest time of the morning.
The KTMs held the lead throughout the session, before Pecco Bagnaia set the pace a few minutes from the end of the allotted time. He then lapped 43 seconds faster than Alex Marquez, in 1:44.744. An encouraging sign of the Italian's progress compared to a quiet and frustrating morning.
Before the checkered flag, however, KTM regained the lead thanks to a superb attempt by Maverick Viñales, completed in 1:44.634. Marc Marquez attempted to dislodge him, but failed by 150 of a second off the best time. He nevertheless finished ahead of his younger brother, in third place.
Big scare for Fabio Quartararo
After only 10 minutes of action, an unfortunate incident occurred on the French side, with the violent fall of fabio quartararo at turn 4. Back on his feet after the stewards' intervention, the Nice driver was nevertheless able to return to the paddocks and resume the session fairly quickly, in an attempt to secure a place in Q2.
He ultimately finished 5th in the session, a fine comeback for a crash that could have cost him dearly. Johann Zarco, meanwhile, finished 17th and will have to go through Q1 on Saturday morning.
Another Yamaha would fall. This time, it was Jack Miller who lost control of his M1 at Turn 15, without major consequences. The Australian finished the test in 13th place.
MotoGP will return to the track at 10:10 this Saturday, for Free Practice 2 this weekend in Italy, followed by Qualifying for the event's races.
