Jorge Martin's return at the Qatar Grand Prix MotoGP, after a prolonged absence due to injuries, took a dramatic turn. The 2024 world champion, who was racing for the first time with Aprilia, suffered an unfortunate fall on the fifteenth lap of the race.
Forced to retire, the number 1 driver remained on the ground before being taken to the circuit's medical center. The accident resulted in chest trauma and a bruised right rib, accompanied by a pneumothorax, as confirmed by his team after the event.
Although the pilot was conscious and had no limb problems, he was taken to hospital for a comprehensive scan.
This latest incident adds to a series of misadventures that have sadly marked his start to the 2025 season. After a crash during pre-season testing in February in Buriram, where he suffered a triple fracture of his left hand, the rider underwent two operations, before crashing again in training, which forced him to miss the first three races of the year.
Martin had recently intensified his rehabilitation to be ready to race in Qatar. However, his physical condition remained fragile, and his goal was to finish the race before thinking about scoring a single point. While he achieved the latter in the Sprint, during which he even battled with his great rival, Pecco Bagnaia, the conclusion of his race was not what he had hoped for.
The Qatar Grand Prix was supposed to mark a turning point in Jorge Martin's season, but this accident could jeopardize his participation in the upcoming races of the year. The reigning world champion's next home race will be at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez on April 27. Until then, Jorge Martin's priority is his physical recovery from the accident.
