Quartararo: “A beginner’s mistake”

Winner last year at Assen with art and style, fabio quartararo experienced the opposite this weekend in the Netherlands. Jumping from the front line, we expected a new demonstration from the world championMore It didn’t quite happen like that.

After slightly missing his start, Quartararo found himself third behind Aleix Espargaro. Returning in the wake of his Catalan rival in the fifth round, he made an attack at turn 5, but it did not work and the Frenchman ended up on the mat forcing Espargaro to make a detour via the ferry. “I made a rookie mistake,” he said. I attacked as if it was the last corner of the race. I must not do that on the fifth turn of the fifth lap. After the race, when you watch the action, you say to yourself that it was a stupid mistake. This is also how we learn. »

A little excess of confidence or deconcentration?

Quartararo very rarely falls in a race. It's simple, excluding his rookie year (2019), he fell six times, including twice during the same race in San Marino in 2020 and this weekend in Assen. “I did as usual, I didn’t change anything,” he admitted. Last year, I was 40 points ahead after Silverstone and I still won to move up to 60. Being ahead in the championship does not influence my strategy or my concentration. »

After falling and starting again in last place, the Niçois returned to his box thinking that something was not working on his bike. But with the weather threatening, his team told him to leave, because there might be something to play for. “I didn’t really make the decision (…), he replied. The team told me to leave, that it could rain, I was a lap behind so I didn't know what I could play. I still kept pushing. We need to analyze what happened on the second fall, but I think it's a problem with the traction control which no longer worked. »

After the arrival of Espargaro (4e), Quartararo immediately went to the Catalan's stand to make his sincerest apologies. “I went to apologize, there’s nothing to say, because it’s totally my fault,” he explained. Aleix had a very good race. »
