Zarco leads the first day in Texas

Some expected to see Marc Marquez at the top of the combined rankings of the two free practice sessions in Austin... well no, it was ultimately Johann Zarco who set the best time with a lap of 2.02.542 established in the last minutes of FP2.

He was more than two tenths ahead of Jack Miller and fabio quartararo, which placed the first Yamaha in the hierarchy in third place. Winner in Lusail, Enea Bastianini was credited with the fourth time ahead of Alex Rins.

Marquez, for his part, took sixth fastest time with the status of the only Honda representative in the Top 10 ahead of Maverick Viñales and Joan Mir. Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin both closed the provisional list of those who will advance directly to Q2 on Saturday.

Aleix Espargaro, who crashed five times last year in Austin, was in 11th position ahead of his brother Pol.

Note that the bumps still posed problems for some like Jorge Martin, who made a mistake twice at turn 9.
