Elfyn Evans: “The championship is still very open”

Throughout the various postponements and other cancellations of events on the calendar, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the program of the WRC 2020 should only be reduced to seven rallies, with a final still scheduled for December 4 to 6 near Milan for the first edition of the Rally from Monza.

A final meeting which will crown the 2020 champion, the title having to be decided between Elfyn Evans et Sébastien Ogier (Toyota), Thierry Neuville et Ott Tänak (Hyundai). The Welshman, however, finds himself in a favorable position since he is 14 points ahead of his teammate Ogier, while Neuville and Tänak are 24 and 28 points behind.

A situation that Evans doesn't really look at, the Yaris WRC driver preferring to concentrate on his upcoming performance in Italy. “I will have to be at my best, comments Evans on the Rally Great Britain website.

For my part, with the points situation as it is, the championship is still very open. We will go to Monza to try to win the rally. That’s ultimately what I’m aiming for. »

After the cancellation of the Ypres Rally, faced with the health deterioration linked to the coronavirus pandemic, seeing only one event on the calendar could in a sense favor Evans. But the Welshman does not necessarily share this point of view.

“You can look at it both ways, analyzes the Toyota driver. If I had had a problem with two rounds remaining, there would still have been a rally remaining to make up lost ground.

Now, if something goes wrong in Italy, it will probably be over: there will be no possibility of recovering points. In a sense, of course, the title is closer, but in reality, things are still open and anything can still happen.

And that assumes that Monza will run on a full route and that all points will be awarded, which we hope. »
