Hyundai arrives with two hopefuls in WRC 2

The category WRC 2 could have suffered from the defection of Skoda in 2020. Fortunately, the category reserved for R5 vehicles will be supported by the Motorsport division of Hyundai, which will enter two i20s on its behalf in at least eight rounds of the World Rally Championship (WRC).

The South Korean manufacturer, which carried out lengthy development tests in Western Europe in 2019 in order to improve the sedan against references such as the Citroën C3 or Skoda Fabia, therefore redoubles its efforts by signing two crews with undeniable potential.

The 23-year-old Norwegian Ole Christian Veiby, victorious in Sweden in WRC 2 last year, will be associated with Jonas Andersson. The Russian Nikolay Gryazin (22 years old), accompanied by Yaroslav Fedorov, was vice-European champion (ERC) in 2018 before winning WRC 2 in Finland.

“Joining WRC 2 is an important decision for Hyundai, reveals Andrea Adamo, the uncompromising Italian Team Principal. First of all, this confirms and reinforces our commitment to the WRC. On a technical level, this will also allow us to prove the competitiveness and performance of our recently improved i20 R5, which is the result of incredible work from the Customer department. »

The Estonian team RedGrey Team will ensure the entry of the cars while being officially renamed Hyundai Motorsport N. Under this name, unknown to followers, in reality hides the structure founded by the former Ford driver and Peugeot in WRC, Markko Martin, former coach ofOtt Tänak, recruited at a high price by… Hyundai.
