Optimism reigns for the Acropolis

In its n°2076, AUTOhebdo returned to the legendary World Championship rallies which have not appeared on the world calendar for several seasons. Among them, Greece seems to have a head start in trying to return to the forefront.

Last July, the organizers of the Hellenic round, now part of the European Rally Championship, published a letter of intent, with the aim of a return to WRC from the 2017 season.

CARhebdo was able to speak with Dimitris Michelakakis, director of Rally of the Acropolis, on this desire to reconnect with the myth that was the event, known to be brittle and very demanding for the drivers and the cars. “We must convince the sponsors, the regional public authorities, and the FIA that it is possible to believe in our desire to organize a world rally.

It’s up to us to do what’s necessary to bring everyone together. We cannot be satisfied with being a round of the European Championship. Greece must welcome back the WRC. I don't know if it's feasible, because the crisis must always be fought. The goal is high but we will try to achieve it. »

The boss of the Acropolis Rally also explains that the event could take on different faces depending on the wishes expressed by the parties concerned. “The character of the rally is different at the request of the teams and manufacturers. We have so many roads in the mountains that we can offer rough or rolling specials. You just have to know what people want. »
