The return ofOtt Tänak in Toyota Gazoo Racing is not simply a nod to the past. It's part of a much broader strategy: preparing for the future of the World Rally Championship. Crowned world champion in 2019 with the Japanese manufacturer, the Estonian driver returned to the wheel of a Toyota as part of a development program dedicated to the 2027 regulations, during an initial test session in Croatia. A full day of driving, followed by a second, marks his concrete return to an environment he knows intimately, after several years spent with other manufacturers.

Interviewed by DirtFishTänak explains the circumstances of this collaboration: "I was contacted quite recently and it was an easy decision to make. I've taken a step back lately, I've been able to dedicate myself to my personal projects, but this opportunity was exciting." A revelation that reflects both the spontaneity of this return and the persistent bond between the driver and the team with which he reached the top.

A different balance, far from the pressure of the championship

While this return might seem to signal a comeback to competition, Ott Tänak is keen to qualify this interpretation. His current involvement reflects a much more measured approach, focused on development rather than performance. rallyIn a calendar WRC Increasingly dense and demanding, the Estonian claims a new way of approaching his career, favouring a more balanced pace. "Doing a few days of testing every two weeks is a much better balance than stringing together rallies as we are currently doing.", he explains. "I can keep riding, rack up mileage and be useful to a top-level team, and I like that." This positioning allows him to remain at the heart of the discipline while avoiding the physical and mental constraints of a full season, while rediscovering a technical dimension that he had not explored for several years.

The project the Estonian driver is undertaking goes far beyond a simple testing program. The 2027 WRC regulations promise a major overhaul of the cars, with technical guidelines still being defined but already identified as a turning point for the sport. In this context, the experience of a driver like Ott Tänak is a valuable asset in guiding development. "We know that the regulations will change significantly, and the team's job is to make the most of this new framework.", he emphasizes. "It will be a huge challenge, especially against the Rally2 cars." This observation highlights one of the major challenges of the coming years: maintaining the performance gap between categories while controlling costs and technical complexity. The fact that the car had already accumulated significant testing before its arrival also testifies to the project's progress.

A collaboration that could open up other perspectives

Beyond the technical aspects, this return is also part of a strong human dynamic. Ott Tänak is reunited with a team with whom he shares reference points, methods, and above all, a common history marked by success. "It's really nice to be back. I know a lot of people here, and we share some great memories.", he confides. "The atmosphere is good, and everything is working very well." One question remains: could this role lead to a return to competition by 2027 — full-time, or on a part-time basis as is the case for Sébastien Ogier Since 2022? The person in question remains deliberately vague: "For now, there's no plan. I still want to drive, but in this form, it suits me perfectly." A cautious response, leaving the door open without confirming anything. In a league undergoing rapid change, his current involvement could well be more than just a temporary measure.
