Last year, the Toyota Gazoo Racing had done very well. With 9 victories and 19 podiums in 12 races, the team had crushed the championship with all the crowns up for grabs. In January, before Monte-Carlo, several executives within the TGR tried to relieve the pressure by asserting that it would be difficult to reproduce the same performance in 2022. The progress of the first two rounds seems to prove the opposite.

Focus on reliability

As soon as it appeared in competition in 2017, the Toyota Yaris surprised with its radicality. Surrounded by skepticism, the Japanese immediately proved to be very fast, but also fragile. It took several months before asserting its solidity. This defect would have been one of the reasons which pushed Ott Tänak from. The latter did it at the worst time since the car was less and less broken down, which he was able to take advantage of Sébastien Ogier (titled in 2020 and 2021).
