Yohan Rossel will not be WRC2 world champion this year

While he was a few kilometers away from a result that could allow him to stay in the race for the title, Yohan Rossel made a mistake which definitively put an end to his hopes.

Yohan Rossel will not be WRC2 world champion this year

In a very tight downhill left-hand hairpin that was going at 10 km/h, the Citroën C3 Rally2 of Yohan Rossel and Benjamin Sarreaud suddenly took off on two wheels. The pilot tried to recover it, but it ended up on its side. As there was no apparent damage, it quickly became clear that once on all four tires, the car would complete the Power Stage, the stopping point of which was only a few kilometers away. The spectators on site had no difficulty putting the Citroën back on its wheels, but Yohan was unable to go any further. After analysis, it seems that the right front tire of the car literally crashed into a rail which was invisible, because it was completely covered in dust. The latter used leverage, breaking an element in the process which forced the crew to take out the triangle signaling their presence. This small incident which has enormous consequences confirms that a rally is never finished before the college of commissioners authorizes the opening of the parc ferme on Sunday evening! In the specific case of the tricolor, this abandonment sounds the death knell for his hopes of a WRC2 title, because he absolutely had to score big points. It's all the more annoying because until this cursed turn, the PH-Sport driver had done what was necessary to arrive in Catalonia (October 20-23) as a serious candidate. Uncomfortable on Friday when he struggled to find grip, he held on. Very good performances on Saturday allowed him to return to 3e step on the podium and even aim higher. A puncture then slowed him down, but at the start of the last day he was still 3e and the goal he had set for himself before the race was within reach. Although the disappointment is great, Yohan Rossel still demonstrated this year that he had taken a step forward in several areas and that he now has everything he needs to claim the title. Before thinking about 2023, he still has one rally to go where he will be able to ride completely free to aim for first place.
