The first free practice session in Toronto was marred by an accident in the pits where two Dragon Racing mechanics suffered ankle and leg injuries and were taken to hospital. Justin Wilson (Dale Coyne Racing) collided with Sébastien's DW12 Bourdais where the mechanics worked on the car French.
Dario Franchitti (Ganassi Racing) set the best time of the session, four hundredths ahead of his teammate Scott Dixon. simon pagenaud (Schmidt Motorsports) took third place.
