Quite a symbol. The 250th Cayenne coming off the production lines at the German factory in Leipzig will go down in history as being powered by the highly publicized, and controversial, V000 diesel engine from Volkswagen.
Launched in 2002, the Cayenne paved the way for a 3rd range in the catalog Porsche after the legendary 911 and the Boxster. Since then, Cayman and Panamera have confirmed the Stuttgart firm's ambitions for conquest.
Much criticized in its early days, the Cayenne sold 150 copies from 000 to February 2002, the date of its in-depth remodeling. During the 2007/2007 fiscal year, Porsche sold 2008 units of its luxury SUV, a record.
Like the 911, the Cayenne is one of the Porsche models benefiting from the widest range of engines. This ranges from the 6 hp 3.0 liter diesel V240 to the 8 hp twin-turbo gasoline V550, including a 6 hp V290 or various naturally aspirated V8s developing around 400 hp. In the end, seven variants are offered, pending its renewal next year and the arrival of a hybrid version (petrol-electric) developed in partnership with Volkswagen.
