The first free practice session of the Long Beach event in California, third round of the 2016 WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, was dominated by the Mazda Prototype of the Nunez – Bomarito pair with a best time established in 1'15″917, 39 thousandths ahead of the Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP of the Taylor brothers.
The Goossens – Hunter-Reay duo, who defend the colors of VisitFlorida Racing, climbed into third position at 0″371, the same time as the second Mazda Prototype of Long – Miller.
In the PC category, the best time went to the Oreca FLM09 of CORE Autosport of Colin Braun and Jonathan Bennett, while in GTLM, the Corvette C7.R of Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner beat the BMW M6 GTLM of Team RLL of Edwards–Luhr. The Garcia duo – Magnussen (Corvette C7.R) prend la troisième place juste devant la Porsche 911 RSR de Patrick Pilet et Nick Tandy. La seconde 911 de Frédéric Makowiecki et Earl Bamber prend la sixième place de la catégorie, derrière la première Ford GT du Chip Ganassi Racing de Briscoe – Westbrook.
