A historic partnership between two of the most legendary cities in motorsport. Thus, on Friday, May 23, Le Mans has formalized its twinning with Indianapolis, located in the state of Indiana, in the United States.
“The Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans are the greatest motor races in the world. This connection has brought us together. But this partnership carries an ambition that goes beyond a passion for motorsport.”, assures Stéphane Le Foll, mayor of Le Mans, in a press release reported by Le Maine Libre.
“This twinning is historic and marks a major step in the international influence of our city.”, the mayor continues to welcome this. The elected official from Le Mans also points out in his press release that this project was launched in 2018.
Twinning between Le Mans and Indianapolis: a charter signed in June during the 24 Hours
Furthermore, as revealed last March by our colleagues from Ici Maine (ex-France Bleu), a charter will be signed on the occasion of the next 24 Hours of Le Mans, in mid-June. This will aim to formalize the objectives of the twinning between Le Mans and Indianapolis.
That is to say: exchange of delegations of representatives of cities, specialists from various fields of urban life, men of science and technology, arts and letters, groups of artists, young people, sportsmen. As well as the exchange of correspondence between groups of pupils and students.
Le Mans and Indianapolis host two of the most legendary races in world motorsport. The Sarthe prefecture hosts the 24 Hours of Le Mans every year, the greatest endurance race in auto racing. Its new American ally is hosting the Indianapolis 500, held last Sunday and won by Alex Palou. These two events, along with the Monaco Grand Prix, are part of Formula 1, of the legendary Triple Crown of the most prestigious races. Only one man – Graham Hill – has managed to win all three in his career.
