Carlos Sainz was unable to take part in the majority of Q2 on Saturday. At the start of his first flying lap, the Spaniard suddenly spun while braking for the first corner and was unable to restart. The pilot McLaren confirmed that his rear brakes locked up at the end of the straight, which caused him to slip.

“If there was ever a day we didn’t want problems, it’s today,” laments Sainz. “We went into Q2 with just one set of tires and I was comfortable with the car, but then we had a mechanical failure which compromised the race a lot because it left us far back on the grid and without the set of medium tires that we wanted for Sunday. »

The Iberian pilot will not have to ask any questions. “It will be a race to get back up, but we know it will be difficult. We will investigate what happened to the car and design the best possible strategy to limit the damage and seize every opportunity that comes our way. »

Apart from his personal performance, Sainz would like to pick up some points in the fight for third place in the constructors' championship.
