Mercedes discovered an oil leak on the second propulsion unit available in the engine fleet of Valtteri Bottas (“PU2” for “Power Unit 2”) ahead of the first free practice sessions for the Austrian Grand Prix. The team has therefore decided to once again install the first V6 turbo hybrid used this season by the Finn (“PU1”).
Bottas will miss the start of FP1 but Mercedes hopes to send him on track in the first 40 minutes of driving. At the same time, the PU2 will undergo a careful inspection to determine the origin of the leak. Remember that drivers are entitled to three engines per campaign and face penalties on the grid beyond this allocation.
UPDATE: @ValtteriBottas' start in # FP1 delayed due to an oil leak. The boys in the garage are currently swapping the Power Unit in order to properly inspect it out of the car.#AustrianGP pic.twitter.com/ffg08AHmJ4
