AUTO Bild reports this Thursday (in German) that, according to a reliable source, contacts would be established between McLaren et Mercedes for the supply of the German V6 turbo/hybrid Power Unit from the 2018 season.
McLaren faced recurring reliability concerns during winter testing in Barcelona, with a Honda unit unreliable and lacking in power. Fernando Alonso recently reported the shortcomings of the Japanese engine, with in particular a clear deficit in speed in a straight line.
A potential divorce between the two parties, despite the solidarity displayed in official communication, would constitute a significant upheaval, with Honda also providing a significant investment in McLaren.
