Halfway through the first free practice sessions for the Canadian Grand Prix, it's Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) who is the fastest with a time of 1'15''003 ahead Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) and Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari), the three drivers remaining in 86 hundredths. Sebastian Vettel et Max Verstappen complete the top 5 while the two Frenchmen close the top 10, Esteban Ocon (Force India) in front Romain Grosjean (Haas F1).

The only incident at the start of the session can be attributed to Carlos Sainz who had to abandon his session after an engine problem in the first laps. Several drivers were trapped by the lack of grip like the two Ferraris or Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) went head to tail.
