Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) is eliminated at the end of Q1 of the Canadian GP. The Belgian failed by a tenth of Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso) and precedes Lance stroll (Williams) and Kevin Magnussen (Haas). The Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein bring up the rear.

Pascal Wehrlein caused a late yellow flag, preventing the drivers from improving at the end of the session. The former champion DTM spun at the first corner and hit the tire wall, tearing off his rear wing.

The Mercedes were the fastest. Valtteri Bottas set the benchmark time with a lap completed in 1'12''685, 7 thousandths ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel follows at 3 tenths, but the Ferrari changed to super soft tires while the rest of the peloton was on ultra soft compounds.
