While a red flag had been waved at least once during each of the weekend's sessions, the first part of qualifying looked set to be fairly uneventful. However, during the final attempt at a fast lap, Kimi Antonelli crashed out of the tunnel, where Isack Hadjar had already been caught out the day before.

Having qualified at the last minute for Q2, the Italian driver will therefore not take part in the second part of this crucial race in Monaco. After an Emilia Romagna GP that was ended by a mechanical problem, the young protégé of the team Mercedes has been struggling to get through the early stages of the European season. This Sunday, he will likely have to rely on a stroke of luck to score points in the Grand Prix.

Much fitter than his Italian teammate, George Russell also caused a red flag in Q2. The Briton apparently suffered an electrical problem on his car, taking advantage of the inertia of his W16 to move forward, trying to bring his car back to the pits. Finally stuck in the tunnel, the Mercedes driver will have to start from 14th place, and concludes a decidedly difficult Saturday for the team led by Toto wolff.
