A motorsport legend will now be linked to the Circuit of the Americas. Austin track officials announced this Monday that turn 20 of the Texan circuit will be dedicated to Mario Andretti, American racing legend and former COTA ambassador. The last bend of the 5,5 kilometer track will be renamed “The Andretti”.
Renowned for being one of the most versatile racers of all time, Mario Andretti is one of only two drivers to have won races in Formula 1, riding a IndyCar, in the World Sports Car Championship and in Nascar. He also completed the very first lap at the Circuit of the Americas when it opened in 2012. The 1978 Formula 1 world champion will therefore be rightly commemorated on the circuit which will host the United States Grand Prix of Formula 1 from October 21 to 23.
The naming ceremony for “The Andretti” will take place on Thursday, October 20 at the Circuit of the Americas, on the eve of the 10th Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, which is expected to see a new record attendance despite the lower stakes in the championship pilots.
