Remember: 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. The 29 August 2021, in Spa-Francorchamps, Max Verstappen won a Grand Prix which never really started due to disastrous weather conditions. The mock Grand Prix only lasted two laps, under a safety car. At the end of the race, half of the points were awarded to the top ten, angering many teams who felt disadvantaged by this situation.

To prevent this type of scenario from happening again in the future, the Commission of the Formula 1 proposed new measures aimed at better managing future Grands Prix which would not succeed. Since the 2022 season, several new scales have been introduced to more accurately represent and reward the progress of a race.

For points to be awarded in a Grand Prix, drivers must have completed at least two laps under green flag conditions, without the deployment of a safety car (real or virtual). Otherwise, no points will be awarded at the end of the race. Today there are 4 different scales depending on the total distance covered in a Grand Prix.

Formula 1 points scales

If the drivers have covered less than 25% of the total race distance, the first 6 drivers are rewarded as follows:

1st: 6 points
2nd: 5 points
3nd: 4 points
4nd: 3 points
5nd: 2 points
6nd: 1 points

If the drivers have covered 25% to 50% of the total distance of the race, the first 10 drivers are rewarded as follows:

1st: 13 points
2nd: 10 points
3nd: 8 points
4nd: 7 points
5nd: 6 points
6nd: 5 points
7nd: 4 points
8nd: 3 points
9nd: 2 points
10th: 1 point

If the drivers have covered 50% to 75% of the total distance of the race, the first 10 drivers are rewarded as follows:

1st: 19 points
2nd: 14 points
3nd: 12 points
4nd: 9 points
5nd: 8 points
6nd: 6 points
7nd: 5 points
8nd: 3 points
9nd: 2 points
10th: 1 point

To try to obtain all the points, you must, as before, have covered at least 75% of the total distance of the race. The current scale in Formula 1 remains the same since 2010:

1st: 25 points
2nd: 18 points
3nd: 15 points
4nd: 12 points
5nd: 10 points
6nd: 8 points
7nd: 6 points
8nd: 4 points
9nd: 2 points
10th: 1 point
