The development of the 2021 Pirelli tires is entering its final phase. Already in Portimao, several teams of Formula 1 were able to test new prototypes brought by the Italian manufacturer during the first half hour of free practice 2. “It was the first time that we provided different tires to different teams,” explains Mario Isola, Pirelli's competition director. .
“Until now, it was two series of the same prototype for everyone. We identified a specification which represents a significant improvement compared to the last one presented and we decided to retain it for 2021. But not all the drivers were able to ride with it. »
For this reason, Pirelli wants a second session reserved for testing the 2021 tires. It should be held during free practice 2 in Bahrain or Abu Dhabi. The manufacturer also plans to test during the two meetings.
