As part of the “Net Zero by 2030” operation, Mercedes will use sustainable aviation fuels for the air travel of its teams. This change should allow the German team to reduce the carbon footprint of its employees' flights by almost 50%. These air journeys represent a quarter of the star brand's carbon footprint in Formula 1.
This switch to sustainable aviation fuels will cost several million dollars but is not included in the calculation of the budget ceiling. In fact, the purchase of this type of fuel is included in the category of indirect aviation emissions level 3.
We are proud to become the first global sports team to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel. ✈️#SAF will become a key pillar of our sustainability strategy, helping to reduce our CO2 emissions and meet our target of becoming #NetZero by 2030. 💚

« Sustainable aviation fuel has the potential to transform the way we travel and the impact we have on the environment, explains Toto Wolff, the Team Manager of the German team. It’s a topic I think about a lot, both personally and professionally. I steal a lot; the team flies a lot. If we are going to fly, we need to find a better way to do it and sustainable aviation fuel is the best solution the aviation industry currently has. We want to be at the forefront of change, using our global motorsport platform as a model for a more sustainable and diverse future.»
