After Red Bull, which could use a ninth engine Renault for Sebastian Vettel, it is BMW which is studying this possibility for the end of the season. The Swiss team only has one new engine for each of its drivers, Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, and the last four Grands Prix could require a ninth engine for both drivers. BMW, which experienced engine problems at Monza, will use its “old” engines for free practice at the next meetings.

According to FIA regulations, each driver is “entitled” to eight engines for the entire season, with each team being able to decide how to use them. The use of a ninth engine led to a drop of ten places on the grid during its introductory weekend.
