New engine and penalty for Alonso in Barcelona

Failing to have performed well on Saturday, Alpine will try to be opportunistic. The French team has decided to install a new power unit in the A522 of Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard was trapped in qualifying, eliminated in Q1 and initially positioned in 17th position on the grid. With this penalty, Alonso will start 20th and last in the Spanish Grand Prix.

All the internal elements have been changed: the internal combustion engine, the MGU-K and MGU-H, the turbo, the battery and even the exhausts. With the installation of this fourth power unit, Alonso already exceeds the quota authorized for the season and must suffer a penalty on the grid. Qualified 17th and penalized by 15 places, the double world champion will therefore start dead last in the Spanish Grand Prix. A sanction with no real consequences which could relieve the French team later in the season in terms of the allocation of engine components.
