For the 24 hours of running scheduled over the three days of the Bahrain winter tests, Pirelli did not impose any compounds on the teams, who were therefore able to choose their allocation of 35 sets from the six slick tyre compounds available (from the C1, the hardest, to the C6, the softest), as well as the intermediate and rain tyres. This last point may raise a smile, since only Aston Martin (three intermediate trains) and Haas (a set of intermediates and a set of rain tires) have chosen the compounds intended for wet tracks. Rain in the desert, admit that it is not common, but the weather forecast currently indicates showers for Thursday! These two teams could therefore take a little lead on the competition in terms of understanding the tires in these particular conditions…
As expected, the C3 compound was the one that was most popular with the teams, given that it will be used by Pirelli for a majority of races in 2025. Mercedes is the stable that has chosen the most, with 27 trains selected. Conversely, Williams only took 15, and will instead focus on using the Italian manufacturer's harder tires, with four sets of C1 and 12 of C2. McLaren et Red Bull adopted the same strategy with many hard trains, and no softer compounds. Only Ferrari and Williams have opted to use the C5 and C6, which will be put to the test on the rough Bahrain asphalt. However, setting a time in the evening with C5 tyres remains a possibility that should not be ruled out.
Of these 35 sets of tires, each team will be able to use 30 during the three days of testing, which you can follow in full with live commentary.
