Why a Grand Prix in New York is not in Liberty's plans

Contacted by the administration of Eric Adams, new mayor of New York since January 1, to discuss the possibility of hosting the F1 northeast of Manhattan, Liberty Media, through its boss Greg Maffei, dampened the city councilor's hopes. “We were contacted to offer us a location, Randall's Island, which is probably not ideal for us. The reality is that city racing in a city like New York is just very, very, very difficult. Las Vegas is one of the few places in the United States where you can probably have a city race, the mentality is different there. New York is a wonderful place, but it's hard to believe they're going to close Central Park for us! »

No doubt Maffei remembers the stillborn plan for a race in Port Imperial, New Jersey, with the city's famous skyline as a backdrop. A Grand Prix included in the 2013 calendar, but which never saw the light of day, weighed down by too many financial problems. Or the Eprix of Formula E, contested in an industrial zone with no flavor or legitimacy other than being branded New York…
