Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber) shines at home by setting the 10th fastest time in the second qualifying session at Suzuka behind Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna, who place the two R31s in Q3.
Force India fails to make it to Q3. Adrian Sutil failed in 11th position ahead of Paul di Resta. Williams placed behind the Indian cars with Rubens Barrichello ahead of Pastor Maldonado. Toro Rosso monopolizes the eighth line with Sébastien Buemi ahead of Jaime Alguersuari. Sergio Perez (Sauber) did not set a time in Q2 and will start from 17th position.
Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) achieved the best time in Q2 with a time of 1:31:424.
