Esteban Ocon (Force India) snatched a place in Q3 of the Austrian GP on the Red Bull Ring by setting the 10th fastest time with half a tenth ahead of Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), the first eliminated from the second qualifying session. The former winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans anticipated the McLaren de Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne. Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) signed the worst time, Kevin Magnussen (Haas) who was unable to participate in the session following the breakage of his suspension in Q1.
Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) improved the lap record at the Red Bull Ring with a lap completed in 1'04''316, ahead by 4 tenths Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari). With its penalty, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) opted for super soft tires and took 3rd position. The Briton will be the only one in the top ten to start the race with red sidewall tires.
