Albon once again took advantage of difficult conditions to climb the rankings. But to say that the Thai driver owes this position only to the rain and the drying track would be an injustice to his pace at the start of the race. Behind Lewis Hamilton at the start of the test, the pilot Williams put pressure on the Ferrari, before the Briton managed to escape once slick tires were fitted to his SF-25.
"I'm very happy, I'm under investigation so we'll have to see! In these conditions, it reminded me of Australia, where we took calculated risks.", he explained on the official Formula 1 website. "We chose the right moment to switch to slick tires, but we were also fast on track. At one point we were trying to overtake Lewis."
Albon couldn't have been more right when he mentioned the investigation, as the Thai driver received a five-second penalty for his infraction. Relegated out of the points, he therefore lost the benefit of his very strong start to the weekend, where he had scored five points. A total that would have given him the third best weekend of his season in Miami... even before qualifying kicked off!
"I'm very happy, even if there's not much to learn from this race for qualifying. It's still a good score for points, scoring that many is what we could have hoped to do on Sunday, so to get there on Saturday is very good."
